please help! Having trouble finding the solution

On my 97 A4 2.5 I was driving down the highway and all of the sudden I noticed my whole instrument cluster guages went to zero. The car was still running fine, and I got off the exit and stopped to try to restart it and reset it maybe, but the car was dead. It woudln't start. About 3 minutes later it started, the gauges were working fine. Everything was 100% power. Its like I was losing power everywhere, and my gas was working fine untill I got off the highway and then it was like feeling like it was going to stall after first gear. This is the second time it has happend. The last time it was like 6 months ago or so. The battery is pretty new. And there are no warning lights on. Any help would be awesome!
