Problem
The syncros are VERY slow between the gears especially 1-2nd. It will take a WHILE before things start to work-in, as you have to wear in the gate(s). Are you absolutely positive that you're grinding or is it notchiness?
I had a similar problem till ~35k on the clock. I can still get grinds/clunks if I don't match or "look" for them when the car is cold. Food for thought: there ARE better feeling boxes out onthe market but not many 'off the shelf' boxes can hold up to the high torque like Audi gb's can.
IE - you're in fourth, at 3K revs, and you're going into third coming to a stop/corner/hill/whatever, you clutch, and as you shift into third, you blip the throttle (in most cars it's a very slight blip, and it's much more immediate - in the A4 you've got to stab a bit harder, and a bit earlier, cause our flywheel is H_E_A_V_Y and it takes a lot to pick it up) to bring the engine speed to a suitable level for a lower gear.
If done right, the only sensation that you've downshifted will be audible - more revs. You shouldn't be getting a jerky motion of sudden engine braking.
Check out www.turnfast.com for directions on heel-toeing.
But of all the cars I've driven, my A4 has the most muscular box of all.
not unlike Anna Kournikova????
