Default Re: Just cause you autoX or drive fast doesn't mean you're hurting the tranny.

would this happen if say I was going 60 in 4th gear and slowly downshifted in 3rd. The transition will not be smooth, but it is slow. Would this have the same effect? And I called up my dealership and they said to show them tomorrow, but I don't want to grind my gears more... any way of showing them without actually grinding them more?>

Default More on Revs

Rev match till the box is warm. Rev match all of the time - you'll be faster. It could take 5-45 min until things (you should feel it) warm up. I think you have synthetic GB fluid in there - I don't, and do ok.

The syncros are VERY slow between the gears especially 1-2nd. It will take a WHILE before things start to work-in, as you have to wear in the gate(s). Are you absolutely positive that you're grinding or is it notchiness?

I had a similar problem till ~35k on the clock. I can still get grinds/clunks if I don't match or "look" for them when the car is cold. Food for thought: there ARE better feeling boxes out onthe market but not many 'off the shelf' boxes can hold up to the high torque like Audi gb's can.

Default If it grinds even when you're doing it slowly, then your syncros are gone.

For every downshift you shoudl be applying gas to match engine Revs to the tranny.

IE - you're in fourth, at 3K revs, and you're going into third coming to a stop/corner/hill/whatever, you clutch, and as you shift into third, you blip the throttle (in most cars it's a very slight blip, and it's much more immediate - in the A4 you've got to stab a bit harder, and a bit earlier, cause our flywheel is H_E_A_V_Y and it takes a lot to pick it up) to bring the engine speed to a suitable level for a lower gear.

If done right, the only sensation that you've downshifted will be audible - more revs. You shouldn't be getting a jerky motion of sudden engine braking.

Check out www.turnfast.com for directions on heel-toeing.

Default Agreed re: feel and durability - feels like you're pushing bricks around, but they're solid.

Neuspeed SS kit goes a long way for feel tho.

Default It's pretty audiable @ stoplights w/ the windows down.

Not really loud but you (at least I can) can hear it when shifting.

Default Yeah - it's definitely gnarly on the ears. Sometimes going into first ...

I get a little clunk that's both audible and felt through the car too. Not too confidence inspiring.

But of all the cars I've driven, my A4 has the most muscular box of all.

not unlike Anna Kournikova????

Default Is Audi hiring Monkey's now to put these cars together or something?

I know companies are cutting costs left and right but this is insane.
