Default Problems:

98.5 Stage 3 1.8TQ.

1) Rough idle for the first couple of minutes of driving. This is most pronounced in the morning. If I have to stop at the stoplight at the bottom of my hill (within the first minute of driving) it frequently dies.
2) The car misses badly ("cuts out") under average acceleration for the first couple of minutes of driving (again, most pronounced in the morning).
3) The "cutting out" also occurs at other times during the day under sudden WOT (or near-WOT).
4) No CEL's
5) No VAG

Any ideas?

Default geez. bad plugs?

vacuum problem
MAF is dirty or bad
Oxy sensor is bad (this would cause CEL I think)


let me ask you something...is it running rich?

They are NGK PFR7B's with about 1,000 miles gapped to 0.030.

Default Is there any way that I can determine if it's running rich without vagging it?

I've noticed that the tips of my exhaust are now jet black but I'm not burning any appreciable amount of oil.

My gut feeling is that it's not running TOO rich from how it drives. I've had it running incredibly rich before and it just doesn't feel that "juicy". I suppose that's not very scientific however.

Default Naw .. they run pretty rich when you get on em. The tips will get pretty black tween washings.

The miss at boost onset/ WOT could be a cp that is getting weak, a bad cp spark plug boot allowing an arc to the head or a Primary Output Stage headed south.
It would help if you could scan for codes.

Default Yeah, I suppose I'm going to have to break down and get the Vag-com. I've

been debating whether I will get a new car next summer or keep this one for a couple of years. I probably will get a new one, so it really boils down to whether I'll keep this one as a project car. If so it will need TB, clutch, etc. I had been putting off buying the VAG-Com until I made up my mind, but it sounds like I should just go ahead and get it. If you get the Hex-USB you should be able to transfer it to another computer, correct?

Default Yes. With the Hex USB the software is not the license .. the Hex USB is so you can run the software

from any number of platforms.
Modding these cars really makes the Vac Com a nearly indespensible tool. Add in a stg 3 and ...

Default Follow up and resolution:

VAG Data:
a) Random/Multiple Misfires
b) Cylinder 3 Misfire
c) Cylinder 4 Misfire

The ignition control module was changed and the problem has resolved.
