Default Question about the coil packs...

When I had my engine cover off earlier today I noticed 3 coil packs, each attached to 2 plugs. Does this mean it's firing 2 plugs at once, or is there 2 coils in each pack?

My last car had 2 coils for it's 4 bangers. The spark went electrode to ground on one plug and groud to electrode on the other plug. This pretty much nullified platinum plug's wear resistance.

There's a lot of wires and hoses under that cover! Everything looked seated firmly though.

Right I saw that, but are there 2 coils per pack?

Default compare the firing order to the way the coilpacks are wired...

I think you'll see that the pack always fires for one plug at a time.

Default But how can that be? The other plug must be sparking during an off cycle.

I mean, it would need a switch or something indise the pack to select the plug getting fired.

Default No, it very simple the plug fires on two cylinders 180 degrees apart.....

one cylinder is firing on the compression stroke and the other is on the exhaust stroke. One spark is "waisted".

Default 2 coils, firing at the same time. High voltage will take the path of least resistance...

That also includes the shortest distance. One coil will give you a misfire on the the longer wire, or the spark plug with the largest gap among the two.

But as ArchAudi said, it is safe to fire them at the same time - it is also good for emissions unless you have a lot of raw gas going in the exhaust then you see flame Aftermarket multipack coils fire in a pair time.
