Question on single tire replacement
I have a tire with a screw through the sidewall that can't be repaired for safety purposes. I was speaking to the mechanic and he said it's best to replace all four (he doesn't sell tires so he's not just trying to upsell). The reason being he said, is that on a Quattro system, the drivetrain will compensate for each corner's traction. If you have different tread / wear in a corner or front to back (change only 2 tires) your drivetrain will be continuously compensating and causing more wear on it.
I spoke to Audi tech and they said 'for optimal performance' change all 4 tires but I could not get a definite answer as to yes or no it would cause more wear on the drivetrain.
Does anyone know if changing only 1 or 2 tires will cause more wear on the drivetrain?
I'm looking at 4 Falken 512 for cost and I've heard they're decent (downgrade from my current SP9000s in 1.5 years use now, but I don't want to pay that much for tires right now). Any comments on these tires?
If I need to change 4 tires it's much better than repairing the Quattro drivetrain, but don't want to if I don't have to.
