My wife and I have a 2001 A4 1.8T 5-speed that is dead stock (we're not tuners like the lot on this board. Cool stuff though!)
Question: we will soon have 50,000 miles on it and are debating the extended warantee. We were wondering if the reliability of these cars is generally good enough that we don't need to worry about the warantee, or whether there are known issues that are common to this model making the warantee a good idea. Any thoughts?

I was going to get a warranty from them, as others have. I did a quote online with my email address and a week or so later, I had a rebate sent to me. Almost weekly, I'd get an increased rebate. The last one was $500 off.
If I wasn't worried about being dropped because of my mods, I would've purchased it. However, it seems to me that I'd void the warranty is several ways, especially since I know that I'll do a turbo upgrade during the 5 years/100k of the warranty. Since your stock, get the warranty with the lowest ded. - it'll pay off in the end and most are transferable should you sell the car.

I bought an aftermarket warr. for 1200, it covers just about everything except airbags and small...
components that to me are DIY anyway. I don't know what the going rate on a trans is but I would wager too much is about right. Buy the warranty and forget about it.

Bought mine, warranty company went bankrupt!
spent $1900.00 extended warranty from dealer. Warranty company (SmartChoice) went belly up but dealer did refund $1300.00 dollars worth. If you don't purchase through an Audi dealer you may not have the same result as I did if the company folds.

I HAVE noticed that the synchros on her tranny (it's her car, not mine) are getting a little rough but I thought it was because I have never been able to get her to match revs on downshifts! Are synchros a weak part of Audi trannies?
