replace a transmission???
They said the tranny is dead, and want ~$6,000 for a new one installed. So...
1. Can I really trust their diagnosis? Might it just be a failed seal or something?
2. How hard is it to take out the tranny? Should I attempt it myself?
3. Where could I get a replacement? Rebuilt? Used?
4. How much am I looking at here?
5. Does any one want to buy/trade a broken A4?
Thanks
2)it's really not terrible, I think anyone with moderate wrench turning skills should be able to do it
3)local junk yard, AudiWorld or other Audi website, ebay, Craigslist
4) I think 1000-1500 MAX, even if you have to buy tools
5)where are you located? I'll come help you if you're close

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts-Accessories_Car-Truck-Parts-Accessories__Audi-A4-1-8T-2001-Automatic-Quattro-Transmission_W0QQitemZ300250479164QQddnZPartsQ20Q2 6Q20AccessoriesQQadnZCarQ20Q26Q20TruckQ20PartsQ20Q 26Q20AccessoriesQQd
These transmissions are very robust and I would be surprised if it
just "died"... sounds like you lost fluid first (seal) and that's when
things started happening?
It sounds like maybe the seal went where the converter mounts
up to the spline. Thus, you lost fluid as evidenced by the puff of
smoke as it hit the hot exhaust. The loss of fluid thus causes the
"gears meshing" sound and why it was hunting for gear. You
might want to get a 2nd or even 3rd opinion(s).
If you do indeed need another trans. you can get one from a
junkyard much cheaper and they usually come with a 1-year
guarantee.
