Default replacing 1 rear tire with an exact match; how much can they

differ in their tread depth? this is a quattro car. Tire is non repairable and I really don't want to buy two as I don't want to keep this size or kind of tire long term.

Default Just have the tire installed and drive it.... others will say your car will flip over

once you go above three miles an hour.

Seriously.

Default 2nd - the minor differnces really won't matter - unless you run like a 35 sidewall instead of 40

or shortchange whatever application you are doing

Default This is what I did...

I took a long strip of paper and laid it around the center of the (mounted and inflated) existing tire. Marked it. Then compared it to the (mounted and inflated) new tire.

The existing tires were relatively new....<5000 miles on them. I didn't find a measureable difference so I used the tires. They're currently running on the wife's daily driver A4q.

Default Wonder what I should do as it appears to be 3mm off (spec converts to 3.1 MM or so)

Already got that extra tire in my garage & wonder if I should have it shaved to match anyway just to not put undue stress on the differential as that is what I'd be doing right? Do tire places usually do that shaving too?

Default There are shops that do shaving - ask around on your local forums to see if anyone

knows of a place.

I have seen cars ruined by mismatched tires.

Default I had wanted to go up to 225/50/16 from the stock 16 size but

my wife will kill me at the moment if I buy 4 or 5 new tires right now. Would it be OK to put 2 225/50/16 in the rear now keeping the 205/55/16's up front until later this summer? Ghetto right?
