Reverse not working
Hey guys, I've got a problem. I went to pull out of my garage yesterday morning when I noticed that my reverse gear wasnt working. I drive a '00 A4 w/standard transmission. That transmission has given me nonstop trouble over the past year! Just a few months ago some gears were messed up, and now my reverse is gone. I can shift into reverse, it's just that the gear doesn't seem to take- i move forward instead of backwards. Today its the same, except that now i cant shift into 5th and my 1st gear takes much wiggling to get into. Any ideas why I'm having so many problems with my shifting? It's rather frustrating and the nearest dealership is 3+ hours away.

Two possible problems that are easy fixes.
Sounds like you are losing later control in the shifter.
Go to the tech article and look up in stall of a short shifter.
The two 6mm allen bolts are to adjust the shifter. The lower, hard to reach one adjusts lateral control.
I bet its loose.
Adjust untill it right (by sliding up and back untill it feels right)
If everything in there checks out, there is a bolt under the car that is involved with translating the the shifter movements into the tranny.
Go to any local mechanic and ask him to check the lateral control of the shifter.
If you can diagnose the first thing I said on your own, and thats not it. Just tell him that its something under the car.
I am sorry that I do not have technical names for you.
My bet is that someoene didnt torque stuff down properly when they reinstalled your tranny the last time.
HAppened to me. The Indi mech came to my house, drove the car up on a curb, and was out from under it in 45 min. No charge.
I would bet it is one of those two things.
