Default Some Autothority 1.8T fun...

While this involves a Passat 1.8T, I though that you guys would find it of interest.
Some early 0-60 results. 99 Passat 1.8T 5 speed. 1100 miles, autothority chip, Dunlop 225 16s, stock air filter. Sunny, mid 50s. 1/2 tank of 92 octane and one 175# person on board.
6.87 seconds.
Better results are definitely possible - I need to launch the car more effectively. The car is now safe to rev but is probably still a bit "tight" since we followed the manual and tried to keep revs (and no heavy throttle) below about 4,000 until 600 miles and gradually increase them up to 1,000 miles. Car and Driver obtained 6.6 with a higher mileage car and stock tires. I made 3 efforts with a couple minutes of steady 40 mph in between them. For the first effort I tried a quick but not abrupt clutch release at about 2,000 Rpm. Big time BOG. Then I tried high 2000s, massive wheel spin. Finally I tried about 2200-2300 and a more abrupt drop and had a bit too much spin but not too bad. That one gave me the 6.87. I also think that this engine may not need redline shifting in all gears due to its torque curve, but I'll have to do some gear chart and RPM number crunching first.
The massive wheelspin attempt yielded 7.5 seconds with most of first gear lost to low traction. The engine bog run I aborted since it would have been really poor. With some practice and hot tires I think I could do the C&D 6.6 if I used a consistent launch method and tried it 4-5 times. Bear in mind that I tried to find a food launch method while attempting to get a good run.
BTW the car gives a nice 1-2 shift tire chirp too! Next month I will try some more and with /without a K&N air filter and perhaps with a test to see if ULTRA 94 helps. There was no pinging during the runs and actually the car has never pinged with either the stock or Autothority chip.
When I compare components I like to use a different technique. On the same strip of road, all tests close together in time, change only one variable, and use in gear no shift times such as 30-60 in second gear (this eliminates driver skill and launch issues) Such runs generally are repeatable to 0.01 -0.03 seconds and can really identify subtle changes.
See my Attn CT gearheads post if you're in the area and have interest in testing your car and mods out.
Stan
