Some info for those who use Chevron Techron. I picked up a bottle at Pep Boys over the weekend
and got to thinking about how it treats "up to 12 gallons", but I've never owned a car that had a gas tank smaller than 12 gallons. I wondered what Chevron expected people to do when they had, say, a 15.8 gallon tank. Short-fill? Buy two bottles? Buy the 20 gallon treatment? The 12 gallon treatments are more easily found (for me, don't know about you), so I couldn't figure the reasoning in selling so much of something for a tank capacity that really isn't so common. Want answers? Go to the source. Here is their response.
"Thank you for the inquiry, it has been forwarded to us here at Chevron Fuels Technical Services.
Chevron chose the 20 gallon treatment size to accommodate vehicles with large fuel tanks, and the 12 gallon treatment size for the average size fuel tank on passenger vehicles. Although the suggested treatment of 12 gallons, and 20 gallons per bottle of Techron does not fit every size fuel tank found on passenger vehicles. There is no need to worry. If you treat a 12 gallon tank of fuel with the 12 Oz. of Techron additive. The concentration of Techron in the fuel is about ten times the concentration of Techron that you would get at any Chevron service station. If you were to use the 12 Oz. bottle on your 15.8 gallon fuel tank you would still have a high enough concentration of Techron in your fuel, and would still provide you with the cleaning power that you are looking for. Even using half of the 20 Oz. bottle (10 Oz. of the Techron concentrate) in 15.8 gal of fuel would be sufficient. The higher concentration of the aftermarket Techron additive is to ensure effective cleaning of excessively dirty engines.
I do not recommend overdosing the fuel with the Techron concentrate. Overdosing the fuel will not harm the engine if it occurs once. However consistent overdosing can have an adverse effect on the oil in you vehicle, by altering physical properties of the oil. Too many treatments per oil change will lead to an increase in viscosity of the oil. Chevron recommends that you only use the aftermarket Techron additive a maximum of 4 times per oil change.
