Default Just bought an Audi yesterday

Hi Folks, Newbie just bought his wife an Audi for the 1st time. It is a 1999 A4 2.8l Quattro. It has 145k on the odo & runs fast & strong. We paid $2,800 cash for it, it was an auction car we bought from a broker & I know nothing of its history, maint, TB etc..It has a few "issues" that I will address one by one. I am praying that this car is a good one & has no major issues. Any advice for a first time Audi owner is greatly needed. I will post her pict tomorrow.

There will be issues. Remember that girlfiriend you had in college that was really kind of a pain in the *** but you kept it going cause the sex was just so damn good?

You will have to assume it needs a TB change if you can not find the history on the car.

I would run a can of oil detergent in the oil for a few hundred mile just to clean out any dirt in the crankcase and hydraulic cylinders in the valve train. Then do a oil change.

A can of BG44K to clean the injectors.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! What have you done! Quick, get her a toyota and keep the Audi for yourself.

Oh well, whats done is done. Yeah TB is what you need to get checked first. Also, since you've driven it a bit, have it scanned for codes, there may be some issues highlighted.

Here are her issues...
1. ABS/Brake light on/off intermittantly, (seller claimed it was an ABS module failure)

2. Check engine light is on, (seller claimed it was an o2 sensor near the cat)

3. occasional burning oil smell, very pungent but vanishes as soon as you pop the hood.

4. occasional rough idle for a few seconds when stopping.

5. engine temp gauge works occasionally

6. seat heaters are dead

7. driver side electric lumbar makes a motor sound but does not inflate.

8. it shifts kind of slowly from first to second...not really a slipping.

9. glove box light does not work, bulb is ok, fuses are all new

10. tag lights do not work, bulb ok, fuses are all new

11. a pulsating feeling when the brakes are applied firmly

12. a bit of a rattle from the right rear wheel when I hit bumps

13. headlamp washers do not actuate when using the windsheild washer.

These are the serious & the picky things. I will be looking for the correct (cheap or used) Vag Com & bentley very soon.

If anyone sees a connection between some of these or has an idea of what may be causing its maladies...Please let me know.

BBA or Module Masters can do a rebuild. Common issue.

2. Check engine light is on, (seller claimed it was an o2 sensor near the cat)

Scan for codes and post results

3. occasional burning oil smell, very pungent but vanishes as soon as you pop the hood.

Cam seals or valve cover gaskets. Do both with timing belt job.

4. occasional rough idle for a few seconds when stopping.

Throttle body cleaning + adaption. Vacuum leak? Tune up.

5. engine temp gauge works occasionally

Make sure your coolant temp sensor is the green one.

6. seat heaters are dead

7. driver side electric lumbar makes a motor sound but does not inflate.

8. it shifts kind of slowly from first to second...not really a slipping.

First shift when cold or all the time? Fluid+filter change would be good idea.

9. glove box light does not work, bulb is ok, fuses are all new

10. tag lights do not work, bulb ok, fuses are all new

11. a pulsating feeling when the brakes are applied firmly

Brake job.

12. a bit of a rattle from the right rear wheel when I hit bumps

Possible broken spring.

13. headlamp washers do not actuate when using the windsheild washer.

Lot of DIY, but nothing sound too pricey. VAG-COM will help narrow down the electrical stuff.

I agree with 5v/cyl's list. Sounds like a weekend's worth of stuff but nothing terrible. The seat heaters; I'll bet that if both don't work, there is a common fault that you will eventually find. Glove box light= switch contact, license plate lights; connector, etc. And the auto trans, yes you should take care of that one. Read-up on how to change the filter and fluid, because it may never have been done on your car. You'll need a few special tools, VAG-COM, and a two or three hours to do it right. Get a list going on what supplies you'll need: valve cover gasket kits, trans filter kit, brake parts, air filter, cabin filter, oil filters, O2 sensors, etc. and order online. I've used several companies, have found autohausaz.com pretty good usually.
