Suggestion for a "98.25" model-year designation....
In discussing the difference between a '98.0 and a '98.5 A4 2.8 (in the recently archived forum), it came up that some of the early '98's have the amber strip in the taillights, but do not have the Audi "football" logo under the side markers. The empirical evidence seems to indicate that the "amber-yes, football-no" '98's were produced slightly later than the "w/football" versions.
Therefore, I hereby suggest that the '98's with the amber, but without the football, be designated as '98.25. This is consistent with the '98.75 nomenclature used by some people to indicate the later models with the relocated cupholders. If necessary, as more distinctions become apparent, perhaps a third digit after the decimal point could be added.
The guys on Bimmer.org sometimes point out the numerous A4 model variations as a negative. But, hey, if you want a unique 3-series, you have to go to the aftermarket. If you want a unique A4, you probably already have one.
Rich D.
'98.00761 A4 2.8 QM

Re: Suggestion for a "98.25" model-year designation....
Are the 98.25 models 98's without the footballs, or 98.5's with footballs (meaning do they have all the other 98.5 enhancements).
I disagree with the bimmer.org boys. I think running changes should be made as soon as they are available, so that the most number of buyers can benefit. To me, this makes more sense than waiting for an arbitrary model year cutoff. Can you imagine if other industries worked like this? (The Pentium III is available, but you won't be able to buy it until the model year 2000 computers come out).
