Is there any real advantage in upsizing wheels?

Or would it be best to just invest in sticky rubbber.
Its just that i have to spend $1400 Aus to repair rims due to previous owner damage and damage while theft of my vehicle.
Insurance only agreed to fix one rim as they said they could not distinguish previous damage from damage during theft.
Now the wheels i want keep going up and it would be cheaper to fix rims.
Too many great performance wheels (eg OZ Racing Supertorismo) and not enough cash as a student.

wouldnt they also be heavier. it seems most of the guys on here have smaller rims
for when they go out to the track. one of the only reason i think they have the bigger ones on is because they are the only ones that will fit their brakes. im not expert but this is just my understanding as it is. i think nicer tires would do more for you performance wise than bigger wheels.

You can get more grip by using wider and stickier tires...
You can improve steering response by using tires with stiffer sidewalls like Bridgestone S-03 for example.
So, there's more than one way to skin the cat, but yeah, larger rims generally result in quicker steering response, but as Chimp pointed out, they can also be heavier and negatively affect performance (acceleration, braking, handling). That said, OZs are probably very light, so if you have the money, go for it.

I also don't want the tyres to extrude past the gaurds
Nothing destrys a co drag efficient like an open spinning wheel.
I don't want to spend money on performance mods to take steps backwards.
Although a lighter wheel reduces the unsprung weight and hey presto your in the game, the only thing is everything that actually works cost money - big money down under!
