Default thermometer quirks?

Okay, so it's August in Boston. Granted it hasn't been a scorching summer, but my thermometer in my 2001 1.8TQ Avant has been acting very strangely lately. A few nights ago, when it was REALLY warm outside, somewhere in the high 80's, I noticed the SNOWFLAKE next to my temp readout in the trip computer display. It was show the temp as 31F!! Then it kept dropping until eventually it read -17F. Later that evening, it started steadily climbing back up to what is around the normal accurate temp. It seemed to be fine for the past couple of days until today when it did the same thing. I just kept saying that the temp was below freezing.

Also, the A/C doesn't seem to be very cold when the temp reads this low. I can only guess that the climate control takes the ambient temp into consideration when it regulates the temp of the air coming out of the heat/air vents. So since it thought the ambient temp was below freezing and I had the climate control temp set to 70F, it started pumping out heat instead of a/c. Not fun when it's in the high 80's.

A few weeks ago, while I was installing my Lidatek jammer in the hot sun, I had the car running idle for a while. Next to the puddle of water (or almost right adjacent to the puddle of water) from the a/c system, I noticed this light brown colored "sludge" for lack of a better word dripping out of the car. Anyone know if these two things are related?
