Thick milky sludge when I changed oil!

Hey anyone else have the same problem... I just switched from conventional to synthetic oil and when I did an oil changed I got tons of this sludge crap that is vanilla in color. Time to throw away the A4 and get a M3.

No time to start changing your oil regularly and use synthetic.

Good riddance, your level of technical understanding begs for a BMW.

Yeah, right!

Missing coolant?

Are you driving enough to get oil temps in the 200+F range? If not, its condensate from combustion (burning hydrocarbons releases water).

If you are missing coolant, its probably a leaking head gasket. Have you had a high engine temperature event?

Send a sample of the oil to a lab for coolant leak detection. If you have access, you could centrifuge it and check under a UV lamp for fluorscence as both kinds of coolant have UV dyes.

someone told me this white stuff builds up if your engine doesn't get a chance to warm-up properly..

like when you do a lot of short distance driving - less than 10 miles per trip.

Either that, or by mistake you put milk into your engine last time ;-)

No.....more

The tech I spoke to at Carousel in Minneapolis said this is normal and it is just moisture and not too worry about it!!!!

RyanCosmos 02-26-2002 12:14 PM

Can you direct me to some write ups regarding that?

Have you tried searching the forums for more info?

I recall someone else posting similar experiences...but I don't recall what the final analysis was. Like others have said, it's probably water condensing in your engine, but you should do a search to confirm that.

I've never experienced that, however I drive my car a minimum of 30 miles each way on a daily basis, and often 70 or more each way on weekends.

Time to start letting your car warm up properly before you shut it off..

Short hops are the WORST thing you can do to a car.. If you think the A4 is bad, how do you think a tempremental BuMWipe would be????

If you let the oil get sufficently warm, it will burn off the water (vapor) that is naturally present within your engine..

Also, I assume that the milky sludge was only up in the valve covers, not coming out of the drain, right??
