sometimes when the car is just idle'ing, there is slight ticking noise coming from the engine. my ford probe used to do that and it was caused by too much air mixing with the oil. so i needed the "revised" ford oil pump to correct it. also, when driving, when the rpms get over about 2500, u can hear it ticking again, but only alot faster. i have a 96 a4 2.8. thanks

I think it's actually piston slap, or something in the bottom.. Apparently nothing to worry about.

sometimes its there, sometimes it not...but i can always hear it when excelerating

i have a 98 2.8 a4 and it made that noise a few months ago. it was the water pump, i got it replaced and it sounds great.

it may be the lifters in the engine, perhaps a thicker oil weight may help

Check your oil just to be safe. Low???
