i have a 1998 audi a4 turbo quattro. my question is how do i know what the symptoms are if the transmission control module needs to be replaced. whats happening now is that the gear selection indicator stays red and does not tell me what gear i'm in. when i shift into tiptronic mode on the shifter, the indicator still says prnd instead of 54321. sometimes as i'm braking and i come to a complete stop there is harsh shifting. anybody have any comments.

Your tranny is stuck in limp mode. Might be:
Tranny low on fluid
Multi-function switch or wiring to it might be faulty---usually the connector to the multi-function switch on left side of tranny has corroded contacts.
