Default Transmission DEAD - 2000 Audi A4 B5 2.8 V6

My transmission died today. I was passing someone and heard a "thunk" and a few other noises like rattling. I had it towed to my mechanic and they have diagnosed that the transmission needs to be replaced. They called the local Audi dealership and were quoted roughly $4,500 for a rebuilt transmission. The mechanic will charge roughly $1,000 for labor.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the direction I should take? Such as any other better deals for a rebuilt transmission or have my own transmission rebuilt or...?

Any ideas welcome.

Please help in Fallbrook, CA.

I guess that depends on what type of transmission is in the car.

I pulled the auto trans out of my 96 A4, took it to a shop and had a total rebuild. $2,700. Put it back in myself. It's an option, but in my case it didn't work out well. It ran OK, but always made noise. But I made a poor choice on the shop to rebuild.

If I had to do it again, I might go straight to ZF and get a rebuilt there. Check this link, they show your trans. Then click their link to distributors. Last time I checked their ZF rebuilds were substantially cheaper than getting them from Audi.

What codes do you see?
Do the output tests check out ok?
Is fluid level correct?

Either fix what you have, sell car and buy another with a proper transmission, or have a ZF certified repair facility fix what you have.

4Driver4: How do you determine if a repair facility is ZF certified?

OK, I guess what I meant to ask is if there was a place on the ZF website that listed authorized service providers.
