Default Trip computer display

1998 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro - Is it possible to get the optional trip computer (center display) installed? I recently bought this car and this is the only thing that is missing that I really would like to have (besides the switchblade key). If so, around how much do you think it would be and where would I get it (dealer maybe?). Thanks for your help.

Default You could buy one out of a wrecked car, and install it.

if you buy new it will be something like $700. I have it in my car and I wouldn't pay more than $5 for it, its really useless.

Default It's useless? I beg to differ...

www.tripcomp.com

We're finding plenty of use for it, hardly useless. Follow the linky for more information...

Just Totally Useless Device...

Default Hmm the problem is, in the cars with the trip computer

there's a 3rd connector, 32 pins or 20 pins depending on your model year. Because wiring harnesses are believe it or not one of the most expensive parts of the car...they tend not put in wires for options which aren't used. So if you put the TC in, and you manage to rig it and get it working the functionality may be quite limited.

It would be interesting to try to convert a non TC car to TC, maybe AFTER we get our product finished enough to start selling we can take a look at what's involved in making this happen. Personally I'm about 99% certain I can make the trip computer 100% functional in a car which doesn't have it. I know all the connections on the radio...I know how the TC gets its information etc. But the wiring will probably be what prevents most people from doing this.

In the later version, which we're going to be forced to make because of the 2002 cars, the interface will be over the CAN bus which will enable the use of the entire display...at that point it would be possible to simply take the whole display and permanently use it for DEI functions, I think the TC would never be any the wiser it was missing all the other functionality...like miles to empty and such.

Default there is a market! ;{)

i don't need headlight monitors, mph, etc. what i want is boost, oil pressure, fuel flow, egt, tot, etc. if you intent to aftermarket a wiring harness to connect these funtions to the tripcomputer display i, for one, will buy it!
