Default Very loud engine clatter; sounds like a truck!

Coming home from work tonight in my 98.5 A4 1.8T, I all of a sudden noticed that the engine was making a very loud clattering sound. It sounded so much like diesel clatter that I thought perhaps a diesel truck had pulled close by, but (ouch!) it was my A4! I was less than a mile from home, so I turned off the A/C and drove on home. Even with all the noise, I noticed no drop in power. At home, I popped the hood, stood over the engine, and listened horrified at the amount of noise emanating from the idling engine. The closest I can describe the noise is it sounded like a really obnoxious diesel engine. The only other source I can think of for a noise like this is perhaps a broken accessory mount, but no belts were loose.

Like all you guys, I take exceptional pride and care in my Audi, so it goes without saying that all maintenance is always performed on schedule, the engine is never pushed hard when cold, and I am conscientious about cool-down periods. My A4 has 40K miles on it.

Any ideas or similiar experiences from the Audi faithful?

sounds like you're experiencing some detonation... which is a bad thing

Default Have a tech check your water pump/timing belt. I had a chattering and it was my water pump

Not detonation if it's happening at idle...

Default Dealer's diagnosis: Timing belt tensioner

Thanks, e, for the tip. Turns out to have been the timing belt tensioner. Guess I get my 60K mile belt change 20K early.

BTW, this is turning out to be $833 repair. Is that about what the 60K mile timing belt change would have cost too? $300 of the bill is just for the timing belt "kit" (includes a tensioner and damper according to dealer). Is that pretty much to be expected?

Default No problem man. Will this be covered under warranty?

$833 seems kind of high just for timing belt, and the kit definitely doesn't cost that much. Check Clair Parts for the cost of the kit and compare labor costs.

Default It's a 98 model, so 3 year mfr warranty is long expired. :(

Maybe if I complain to AoA, they will agree 40K miles is too short-lived for a tensioner and reimburse me. Can't hurt to try.

FYI - Timing belt tensioning kit from Clair is $210. Dunno know if their kit includes a belt. Or maybe my dealer here in S. Texas is making a little more parts profit....
