Waterpump on my '96 2.8 should i get it replaced now?
I bought the car with 60,000 miles on it but the shop says that I wont need it replaced until 90,000 miles. I've done some research and most everyone says to do it at 60. I've only had the car for a couple weeks and I'm starting to worry about this. The guy is a friend but it's still a business, you know? Should I ask about him replacing the pump and timing belt at a reduced cost? Should I even worry about this? I have the obligatory NY State used car warranty (90 days or something) but i don't want to wait for a problem, i'd rather nip it in the bud so to speak.

It's always good to get it done with the timing belt....
That area needs to be accessed for both, so it's good peace of mind to just do it once. Getting to it is labor intensive ($$$) Pay it only once.

Also, if the pump fails - you can severely damage the engine.
And yes the 60K miles is correct about the timing belt. I think some have had theirs fail before 90K miles (Could the 90k be Kilometers?) I have also seen that 5-7 years also is a good time to replace the belts too - if your miles are not that great - aging is a issue too - just like in tires.
Don't forget a new tensioner too.
