The dealer has a "dealer invoice" document for each car which shows what the dealer paid for that car (ie. their price).<p>This is not entirely accurate since the dealers also get volume discounts and other incentives, but the dealer invoice price is used as a benchmark for the purchaser. If someone pays $1500 "over invoice" then theoretically the dealer made $1500 net on the sale.<br>

Also in USA the government sensing that a price fixed by the manufacturer could limit a free market economy dictated that manufacturers set a Suggested Retail Sales Price. Thus, the invoice price and the MSRP leaves room for negiotiation.<br>There is more to it than that as stated others.<br>Skimants 2.3 Qspt-tip
