what size bolt is the front two axle bolts on the 1997 a4 2.8 quattro?

Depends if you have after market cv axles or not. I’ve run across 17mm Allen, 1” hex bolt, 1-1/8” hex bolt, and a 19mm Allen. Remember, it’s a 1 time use bolt and needs to be replaced not reused. Be careful you don’t break tools removing it.
