What are some of the rarest color A4's?
#17
'96-01s came in at least 20 colors, but we only got about 12 in US...
Back when I was dreaming about ordering a car I checked out the audi uk and audi deutschland websites.
Audi USA only gave us a very small range of what the factory produced. This goes for engines, options, trim, and colors.
For example there were five different greens, ranging from 'Laurel Green,' which was dark, almost like British Racing, to 'Gala Green', which was light but very saturated. There were several blues we never saw, like Azure, and an extra-spicy Salsa Orange. These were gutsy, out-there colors and AoA was probably smart considering how few orders they got for Tropic Green or India Red. I have seen cars in both those colors, and both are cool...India Red in particular is much nicer in person than you'd think. Check the archives for photos of former AW writer Matt Daniels' Avant...it rocks!
There was also the beautitful Quartz Grey (Achatgrau im Deutsch), a dark silver which is finally available here on the '02s. At least it's a relief from all the light silver cars!
My personal favorite color of all is Pelican Blue, which was known elsewhere as Kingfisher Blue. This puzzles me...did AoA think 'Kingfisher' was too long a word for short American attention spans? Besides, pelicans are either white or brown! In any case it's a great color, and I've seen Avants in that color which are drop-dead.
Interestingly, AoA called colors like Pelican Blue, India Red, and Tropic Green 'Cool Shades' and charged extra for them. In Europer and the UK they marketed *different* colors as an upcharge and called them 'Lifestyle.' As I recall there is already a product called that in the US and it comes it colors, too!
My hat is off to anyone who shows a little color in our monochromatic Audi world.

ps: Red cars are the fastest...ask any cop with a radar gun. =:+{
