Whats the best way to degrease a pair of used heads? Cheap DIY solutions?

I did a really gunky vw 8valve head not long ago with some of the orange capped...

engine degreaser, scrub brush and a hose... it got 90% of it, then I did a spot cleaning with brake-cleaner.

Dont forget to give it a lil spray of WD40 after the brake cleaner though, or you'll get corosion pretty quick.

Have someone else hot tank them....

Let them deal with the noxious waste. This is assuming they can be hot tanked. I can't remember but maybe they can't be because they're aluminium.

I paid the local engine shop $25 to hot tank mine...

you'll spend at least that in degreaser and carb cleaner and still not get it as clean.

just my 2 cents.

best suggestion imo and not have to worry about health hazards too

Definitely go to a local shop

Have them do a valve job too if one is needed. Also, have them check the head face to see if it's flat. If not too far out they can also machine it back to flat. If too far out you now have nice scrap Aluminum for your metal casting projects.
