xpost from wheel/tire forum: Last minute winter tire advice: Dunlop WS, Michelin PAs, Nokians?
Sorry for the Xpost, but traffic is pretty light on the W/T forum:
Hi all.
So I've been stalling on getting a winter setup, hoping to find a good used setup, or at least a set of imperfect 5-spoke wheels, and I've run out of time.
It snowed yesterday here in Chicago and I suddenly remembered how I skated, and I do mean SKATED, through last winter on the Dunlop SP8000s. Yikes.
So I think I'm just going to put winter tires on my 7-spoke 16" wheels, which are already a bit dinged up. Then in the spring probably I'll buy 17s.
My winter driving will be mostly in the city, where the streets are cleared fairly promptly, but I do still have to contend with snow, slush, ice, etc.
-I could order the Dunlop Wintersports from Tirerack for just over $100/ea, but I'd have to have them mounted here, after waiting for them to be shipped, both of which would add to the cost. I could do the same thing with the Blizzak LM-22s at considerably more cost.
-I could get Michelin Pilot Alpins from Costco, at something over $100 mounted. The easiest and most economical option but I don't hear much about the tires.
-I could get Nokians, either the NRWs or Hakkas, from a dealer north of Chicago that supplies tires to The Exchange, the dealer I go to. I am not sure of the cost but I think it's a good bit more than either the Dunlops or Michelins, but I know people are very enthusiastic about Nokian tires.
Sorry for the long preface, but I'd welcome any comments from users of the tires I mentioned, especially the Nokians as I know the least about them.
Thanks,
Alan

I'm riding on Bridgestone Blizzak WS-15 205/55/16 and like them.
They ride nicely at speed, and have an acceptable record for snow handling...also, they were left over from a previous car, and so didn't cost me anything out of pocket.
