Default You know that wives tale about switching to synthetic oil later on in life...when the car has high

mileage? They say the car may be prone to leaking oil because of all the dino sludge that may have built up over the years.... I've read articles that stated such (but very few experiences that actually confirm it), and I've also read articles that suggest that's a bunch of nonsense.

Well, my 10 year old beater received 5 quarts of synthetic last fall, with 74K on the clock (all with dino oil changed at ~3K intervals). I'm noticing a lot of small oil spots being left behind at ~79K. Next weekend I'll be underneath scoping things out and changing the oil. We'll see how much truth there is to this wives tale.

Yeah, I've heard two different stories on this as well. :-( BTW, which synthetic did you use?

That wouldn't have anything to do with it being a Mustang would it? :-)

Default I remember hearing that old style paper gaskets...

...rely on the "Dino Sludge" factor to seal properly.

Sounds credible, but it could just be more bunk too...

Default yeah, but if it was all the sludge that kept your engine together, then who wants such a ...

ticking time bomb anyway?

Raj - time for a new beater car :-)

Default I'd love nothing more than for this thing to stop ticking...

but as long as it's running, I just can't justify dropping coin on *another* car! :-) With my luck, this engine/tranny will have another 75K left in it. :-( I'll say this though...this car drives like ****, has a crappy gearbox/tranny, and a lawnmower engine, but it's never needed anything other than fluid, filter, and plug changes. I can't say the same for either of my Audi's! Audi/VW really needs to get on the ball! I've posted recently about a good friend that is abandoning the brand due to excess repair costs after the warranty expired. I just got a call from another friend whose sister has a 2.5 yr old Jetta VR6. She's absolutely fed up with the car...nothing but issues and trips to the shop. When the lease is up in Nov. she's going back to Japanese.

Default You already saw the proof!

"Well, my 10 year old beater received 5 quarts of synthetic last fall, with 74K on the clock (all with dino oil changed at ~3K intervals). I'm noticing a lot of small oil spots being left behind at ~79K."

It's obviously already leaking!

Just kidding! I think you might run into problems if you were to flush a really old engine (let's say at 150k mi) with flushing oil. But then it might leak no matter what oil you put in. :-P
