1.8T Gas Mileage..??? Is this normal???

I am not complaining, just wondering what others are getting or is something up.... BTW, I have had the car for only three weeks, so this is why I am asking.....
04' with a 6 spd, no mods and I am getting 19.8 mpg?? 286 miles when the low fuel light came on, the tank took 14.45 gallons...19.8 mpg!! Is this right? 50/50 city/highway driving, no long warm ups... IDK.. just seems low?? I got 22/24 with my old 202,000 mile A4 2.8!

ReTodd 12-31-2008 06:26 AM

My gas mileage is lower than that. And with the cold weather it's worse than usual.

lawong 12-31-2008 06:44 AM

seems low.. my last fill up.. 50/50 city/highway was 300 mi/12.5 gal (24 mpg)

Denim'03 12-31-2008 06:44 AM

That's pretty low for stock, lately I have been getting

around 22mpg(calculated) on a FWD 5 speed, slightly modded. I would also average 25mpg in the summer. Don't know how many miles are on your car, but you might be due for a MAF and o2 sensor. o2 sensors tend to go blind with age, allowing the car to run a bit richer.

My mpg have suked in both my 1.8T's

I dont drive like a maniac & its 95% hwy. But, I also dont drive 55 and thats the only way its seems these dogs get half decent gas mileage. Winter gas is full of MPG suking additives which brings it down even more. Thank the Gods gas is down to a $1.65 here!

gofast951 12-31-2008 07:06 AM

54,000

Tgr_Clw 12-31-2008 07:08 AM

I get almost the same fuel economy during winters. It's much better during summers.

Spinnetti 12-31-2008 07:21 AM

23-25mpg... the low number in winter...

I have a BT too, and that knocked off 1-2 mpg, but yeah, these don't get great milage.

GDawgA4 12-31-2008 07:49 AM

21-22 mpg. 40/60 city/highway, about 300mi/13.6-14 gal.

Chekm8 12-31-2008 08:53 AM

time for a tuneup?

plugs, air/fuel filter, oil change might help bring it back closer to normal?

tonyj 12-31-2008 09:41 AM

2nd on a new O2 sensor. My '04 1.8 6M is getting 26 -27 average driving

and 32 on highway in recent weeks. Chang O2 and 2nd on checking the MAF also.
Pull codes.

Merkin 12-31-2008 10:06 AM

with normal non winter blend i get 24/30, but my engine is also kept in top shape

Robson0172 12-31-2008 11:31 AM

My girlfrind's 1.8T was reading 18.5 or so and I reset the MPG

counter by holding the button under the lever until it resets. Then now it reads 26 to 29 MPG. Maybe the counter can use a reboot. Just a sugestion...

Murph 12-31-2008 11:52 AM

Summer I get 26 actual. In winter I'm getting 23-24. Mostly sane driving

Whoismario 12-31-2008 02:17 PM

2nd! +Seafoam it.

gimik 12-31-2008 04:47 PM

i always see ppl here claiming pretty high numbers, but my mileage is usually around that (18-20)..

if i drive like a granny i can get 22-23. i am chipped with bigger injectors, which takes a hit, but even before that mileage was only 1-2mpg better.

it's been consistent from i got the car at 60k to now at 125k. (fyi, i seafoamed at 110k)

Denim'03 12-31-2008 05:37 PM

Is your belly pan on? I lost a few MPG's when I had it off for a while.

jwj 12-31-2008 07:03 PM

I get 30 mpg on hwy at 75 and I have 153K on car. No cat, free flow

exhaust manifold, free flow exhaust, big turbo, etc.
Much better then stk. as long as I keep my foot out of it...

Denim'03 12-31-2008 08:34 PM

Are you going off of the cars computer for the MPG? The......

dash read-out is only (somewhat) accurate on a stock car. Once you start modding you need to VAG the controller to compensate for the larger fuel injectors. When I was running stage 1+ I would show 32MPG on a 50/50 commute, when in reality I was getting 26MPG.

EBG 18T [Eric] 01-01-2009 04:06 AM

Seems a little low. Do a Seafoam or BG44k treatment and try a different brand of gas.

I seem to get the bast milage with Shell up here in NH. Winter usually 22-24mpg, summer 24-26mpg. with most driving on secondary roads, 3-4th gear.

If you are still on the factory plugs it might be time to check those, air filter and also check the O2 sensors.

Jiggsy 01-01-2009 01:44 PM

that's about what I get

jwj 01-01-2009 04:45 PM

You are correct- I did Vag as the pulse rate of the larger injectors will show an

increase in fuel mileage. With so much of the restrictions off my car, (plus living in FL with everything is flat) I can get over 450 miles per tank if cruising on hwy.
Now, through any stop and go, hills and spirited driving and it drops hard.
So, my real average is less as I don't care all that much about a few mpg here or there.

The amazing thing is my 05 A6 3.2 will show, (on cars' reading) an average of 30 mpg at 74 on hwy.
This engine has 12.5:1 compression and is pulling around a 4,000 pd plus car with all wheel drive.
Once again, hit a hill, stop and go and all this changes...

initialA4 01-01-2009 06:16 PM

Mmm I remember my A4 had 23mpg during summer for 50/50, 21 for winter
