1st Gear Grinding

OK, I've got an 04 1.8TQ 6sp with 14k miles. About 1 month ago, the car started grinding in 1st gear. Especially at initial launch to about 10mph. Shift to second, and quiet as can be. Inside the car it sounds very whiney (like an old American tranny at highway speed needing new fluid). From outside the car, it sounds like teeth are loose or not engaging - pretty loud metal mechanical noise.

Took it to the dealer and they said Audi told them to put some additive in the transmission. Whatever - no change. I think the tranny is going bad.

Anyone else with this problem???

Also, this is not the infamous ABS noise when starting off in the morning or after the car has sat for a while. My car does that and has always done that religeously.

Thanks in advance.

take it back if its still having a problem. they need to replace it if the fluid didn't work

you'll eventually grind off 1st gear until you won't have 1st anymore.

might not be related, but i once experimented with my old car to see what would happen if i threw the gear back into 1st while running above 40mph. i grinded the gears trying to push to 1st and eventually didn't have a 1st anymore. i had to start my car in 2nd to get it moving. the good part about it was that trannies were easily found at the junk yard for my old car and they didn't cost that much. one of those things that made me wonder so i tried it.

in any case, you need a new tranny

Audi is putting a new tranny in the car. I am supposed to have it back today. I'll let you know what transpires. Keep your fingers crossed for me, I just hope I don't notice the difference in the car (other than the grinding being gone).

hey what was the outcome of your problem and did you ask what was really wrong because I have the same problem but my car is chipped and when audi hears that the car has a chip in it they say the warranty is void on all powertrain
