2.8 or 1.8T

I am going to buy a used audi, which engine would you recommend. I plan on buying a 99 or a 98.

1.8T. more tuneable

if willing to chip then 1.8, if not then 2.8

Since you're talking the B5, go 1.8T

Even stock it's decent. The 2.8's accelleration is unimpressive.

Get the 1.8T. Save some money or buy a newer model year. Get a 99.5 as you'll notice cosmetic improvements such as single piece headlights, cleaner door handles and updated tail lights. The 00'+ is also fine but you'll have DBW, which some don't like the feel for.

I don't remember if it was up to the 97 or 98 but the A4 had problems with the control arms.

Even though I bought the 3.0, I wouldn't get the B5 with 2.8. The 1.8T is much better suited to that car, and if you ever to decide to mod, it will probably be plenty quick.

depends which model exactly...

If we're talking quattro and Tip and you're not thinking of chipping, then 2.8 definitely, or else the 1.8T will feel very lethargic and slow to get going.

Otherwise, even a stock 1.8T with manual transmission would be a fun car to drive. Even more fun with a chip :-)

One thing you need to make sure is that the timing belt has been replaced. These things like to go early, causing catastrophic engine damage, long before the Audi recommended 105K or 120K mile change interval. You'll find that most people change theirs at 60K miles just to be safe.

If you are going to mod then the 1.8T, but the 2.8 is a great daily driver. With a ported throttle

body and ported intake, the car is much more responsive. Also the 30v 2.8 can be supercharged for around $5k.

2.8 with the chrome trim. I saw a green Avant like mine with out the chrome, no comparison.

The 2.8 has good torque figures, 207ft-lbs with the 200hp VAG A6 mod. For me, the Avant body heavier in rear, seems well balanced with the more massive V6. If you want a little better mileage and more mods, get the 1.8t. I've had 4 A4s inc B6 1.8tqmx and like the B5 2.8 30v best.
