Default 2004 1.8T Quattro, Speedometer not working, Odometer OK?

So this questions seems to be asked often without definite answers or folks ending the story. I hope this thread will be different with some kind of conclusion.

SO, the Speedometer on the car with 134K miles went out with a P501 code. The Odometer and everything else is fine.

I removed all the road wheels and cleaned all the ABS speed sensors and checked their wiring.

Am I looking at a bad instrument cluster speedometer unit?

Rally hope someone can shed some insight!

BTW, it was the speed sensor in the left front wheel, inexpensive part.

Nice clean instrument panel, and at 132K miles just broken in (120K miles less than mine).

We just sold it with 160K, engine showed no signs of wear, though just about every hose had to be replaced. So my coworker is selling her 2006 S4, but not going to be tempted. The Audi has the best seats of any German car. I miss the purr of this 4 banger.

As long as the sensor is for the left front, then it should have the extra wire for the speed sensor.
