2004 A4 Quattro won't go in gear after engine swap
My oldest found a 2004 A4 Quattro "with issues" in the local Craigslist. The "issue" turned out to be the No. 3 Connecting Rod lounging around in the oil pan but, the price was right so we loaded it onto the trailer and brought it home.
Lost a little Tranny Fluid from the radiator and cooler lines during tear down but, this ain't our first rodeo and we quickly plugged the lines and let the radiator drain...
Sourced a block from an 04' Jetta Wagon (an AWM with forged internals hoping to avoid the fate that befell the poor AMB the A4 shipped with) and proceeded with a fairly uneventful rebuild...
Now... I bolted the Torque Converter to the Flywheel and during installation, rotated the crankshaft by hand until the block and bellhousing slid together... We had to rotate the block slightly on the mounts to get it bolted to the transmission but, the rest of the rebuild was uneventful...
She started right up on the first try and after allowing the block to warm to operating temperature we shut her down to check for leaks, (none!) and bolt the service carrier and bumper back on...
Fired it back up and put it in reverse to take it for a test drive and... nothing... Drive? Nope!...
The VAG Cable we ordered at the outset of this project should be here any day now but an OBD2 scan throws
P0811: Excessive Clutch 'A' Slippage
and
P0730: Incorrect Gear Ratio
Clearing these codes causes the PRNDS on the Instrument Cluster to return to normal...
I'm almost certain we didn't Bork the Torque Converter/Transmission during installation... of course.. we don't know it wasn't Borked when we got it since we bought it with a blown engine...
any thoughts before we drop the Tranny and finish pulling the guts out of the poor Junkyard Jetta?
Thanx!
