Default Me too...But if we get (NA) the current euro-spec 190 hp 1.8 T in Fall '04, it will mean...

...That no 2.0T will be coming right after in May 2005.

Although I would buy it in an instant, it seems unlikely we will get the 190 hp 1.8T at all. If Audi had any intention of bringing this engine to NA, they could have done so for '04.

As for the 2.0T, if it is forecast now for April/May 05, this timetable should, in the proven VW/Audi tradition, slip and slip until October '05.

Default ok, so it is a different engine

So why do they need a 3.2l vr6, a 3.0l v6, and a new 3.2l v6? That is not cost efficient. Something has got to give, so that is why I speculated that they would drop the 3.0l in the A4. The motor is nothing special anyway, so why bother to keep building it along with the other 2 engines?

Default Yea, that is what I think will happen. AND, I bet the 3.2 is loosely based on the 3.0.

Economically efficient to have so many engines? Not really, but having products with transverse and longitudinal layouts does not allow for much engine sharing. Caddy shares its Northstar engine with transverse and longitudinal layouts, but all the cars that it is shared with have HUGE engine bays (Allante (transverse), STS (longitudinal), Deville (transverse)).

Since the transverse layout Audis and VWs are small cars with tiny engine bays, they don't have the room to share engines across the line.

Default I agree. Another point to remember is that CVT was a factor in the 3.0's output requirement...

The fact that the 3.0 falls just under the upper torque limit of the CVT is not a coincidence. Cosworth could have made a more powerful engine out of the 3.0 and I'm sure Audi would have gladly used it with Tip and manual trannies. However, I doubt they were willing to implement 2 new V6's at the same time when the 3.0 was introduced (one more powerful and one for CVT), so everyone suffered the 220hp fate for the sake of the CVT.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see whether or not the CVT is still in the line-up when the new engines are rolled out and if it is, what will be powering it. Of course, the best solution is that Audi develops a more robust CVT that can handle a more powerful motor, but if that's not possible, I think we'll see it quietly disappear or not be mated with a V6 at all...

...And, as a 3.0 owner, I have to say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with this engine. Unfortunately, with other auto makers upping the HP ante so quickly in recent years, I think Audi got caught sleeping at the wheel in this case...

Default 2.4l FSI coming in 2005 according to AutoWeek...

AutoWeek has an article on the LeMans Quattro which claims that the A4 will be getting a 2.4 litre FSI engine in the first quarter of 2005. Nothing in the article about HP/torque though...

AutoWeek Article
