60k service & repairs
Folks....maybe you can help me out. My car (2003 A4 1.8T FWD) is in an indy shop for 60k service and replacement of a rear wheel bearing (second one - first replaced at 50k). Shop has just called and stated the following also needs to be done:
rear brakes (pads + rotors) $400 - said rotors cannot be turned - is that correct? Front upper leading + trailing arms $800 60k service $360 Rear wheel bearing $470 Wondering about the control arms - STFA and found a lot of problems on the B5, but not many on the B6 at only 60k miles? Anything else that I should be looking at during this massive wallet hit? |
Some prices seem a little excessive. Maybe his boat payment is past due?

rear rotors are like $60. pads are $40-50. 1-1.5 hour labor at most.
60K service - spark plugs, oil change and air filter change - $360??
Wheel bearing is $100, so that leaves them with 4hrs of labor? If doing the wheel bearing there should be no extra labor for brake job for the most part on that side of the car. Watch out. Find a new shop. |
60K service is an oil change and a dust & pollen filter change
Agree with a_CQ about rear brakes, that's excessive. Front suspension components, that doesn't make sense. What specifically is wrong with them? Ask them to detail what happened.
You are right, common B5 problem, not a common B6 problem. $470 for rear wheel bearing seems excessive too. Shoot, for those prices, you might as well have gone to the dealer. |
also brake job and bearing job overlap an hour of labor
|
B6 control arms are good. At 60k, get the timing belt done.
The B6 doesn't have the problems with control arms like the B5 did. That shop seems to be only operating on B5 knowledge.
You're due for the timing belt/water pump to be replaced. Nice complete kit you can get from ECS. It might be a good idea to seek out another shop or talk them down to realistic prices. |
