A4 P0340 CamShaftPositionSensor Replacement
Dear Friends,
The CEL came on a few days ago and I stopped using my 2005 A4 2.0. Temperatures fell to -20 here in Vermont so I let the car sit for a while, refusing to drive it. Today, 40º temperatures, I went 1/4 mile to our local O'Reilly's and discovered the P 0340 error from the CEL.
After doing simple searches it's clear that I can change this and do whenever possible to defray costs. Is there anything else I should watch out for? (O'Reilly's has this part: Import Direct 3 Terminal Engine Camshaft Position Sensor)
The car is not running particularly rough, although within a few days of the CEL appearing the car did stall once.
Thank you all so much - any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thomas

Thank you so much for replying lyleswk. I don't imagine it's a US car, I don't know about the timing belt. I inherited this car from my father (only owner) who was very diligent about taking care of it, so I'm assuming it was replaced, but, in truth I don't know and found no repair records. Are there electronic records I might access? Ran the car this week a short distance, it sounded just fine. I am not using it until I replace the CamShaftPositionSensor. Just waiting to find out if I have the right part - from Europa parts.
Again, any advice will be much appreciated. T

What is the mileage? Any strange noises?
Truthfully, I afraid the best you can do is just start making some assumptions. Assuming the 2.0 has a similar setup to the 1.8, cam sensors very rarely fail based on my lurking on the forums. It is usually an old belt that has stretched and jumped a tooth or the cam adjuster. Cam adjuster comes with noise, so I would start with the belt, especially if you have no history on it. You don't want to let that go and ding a head.

Dear friends,
I have recorded the sound of my 2.0 L engine and have posted it here. Given the advice that I've been given about the sound of the engine and this kind of CEL alert, I thought it prudent to take advantage of your knowledge about what to listen for. This higher pitched repeating sound has not, I do not believe, been a part of the cars normal sound. The lower, underlying sound is. I would be very grateful for your diagnosis of the sound. IF it is time for a belt change etc. and I choose to bring it to my mechanic, can I drive it there - approximately 2.5 miles, or should I have it towed. The car, currently runs without a problem, however, I have not been driving it. Full disclosure, this recording was made with a cold engine. Temperatures today have been in the 40's a heat wave of sorts ;-). Thanks so much, Thomas

That sounds like a cam adjuster. It should be okay to drive a few miles...

P.S. I would still suggest you replace the belt if you don't know the history.
