Alternator death

Usually the only thing to go wrong with the alternator is the brushes. If you get your's out you can see if this is the case. Replacement brush/regulators are available.

the car has just under 100K miles.
with regard to the brushes? i am not sure if that is the case? the noise sounds to me as if the spindle or bearings are cooked.
is there a sound that the alt would make if the brushes are bad?

Bad bearings would be more unlikely but just as replaceable, and cheaper if you did that yourself. Otherwise call around at the larger autoparts stores, they might have a rebuilt which would have the new bearings and brushes.
