Anyone have instructions on changing the coolant neck on a 1.8T....
It's the part on the backside of the engine near the head that's been known to leak down onto the transmission bell housing. I saw the tech article here, but it looked like it was for a B5 as it did not have all the plumbing and wiring in the way that my car has. Anyone know what I have to remove to gain access to it - or is there a way to sneak past the stuff that I'm not seeing? To me it looks like I need to remove the rubber crankcase breather hose and hardpipe as well as push some wiring out of the way. Looks like a real PITA to change $20 in parts.

There's really no skipping steps here. The coolant flange repair is very similar to the B5 write up

It lets you grab spring clamps, like the ones on your coolant lines in places
normally not accesible to your hands and/or regular pliers. The coolant flange has one specific hose sticking out towards the right side (looking at engine front to back) that is almost impossible without a tool like this. I did it the hard way, but it cost me an extra hour and some slight modifications to my regular set of pliers to get done. With this, it's a breeze.

OK, but it still looks like I need to remove the crankcase breather hose and hardpipe...
Was this your experience too? Were there any other parts that I can remove to make things easier?

Yes remove that, removing the air intake and intake shield will make things easier as well. Have
some zip ties with you, be prepared to cut a few of them to loosen some wiring over and around the valve cover.

Thanks for the info - sounds like a real PITA, but I can't see paying someone...
$200 in labor to change $20 in parts! You wouldn't happen to have the P/N's for the coolant neck and a new coolant temp sensor? I might as well change the sensor while I'm in there.
