Sounds like your battery just has low voltage. Measure the voltage across the battery which should be right at 12 volts.

Hey I live in Seattle and would really appreciate the phone number of someone who knows Audi better than I do for advice on my 02 A6 Quattro Avant. So any contact info would be great. Thanks.

My son just moved in the area and takes his TT to Redmond Werkshop. He also understands Woodinville Sports Cars is a good choice.

Sounds like a battery not having sufficient 'umgh' to turn the engine. Can you get hold of a spare good battery from another car? - that you know is good? Or at least a donor car hooked up with jump leads and make sure you have a GOOD connection, the cable should warm when they draw current as you try to start the car. I had something very, very similar on another car of mine.

Borrow a voltmeter, and a battery tester (a/k/a a "toaster" ). Before you start, take off the leads from the battery and clean them. Always take off the negative lead first and put it on last. Follow the ground (-) lead to where it's attached to the engine. Take it off and clean it well. Reconnect everything.

Take the voltmeter and get a reading across the battery posts with the car off. It should be 12v. Now start the car and check it again. It should be around 14v. Much less and the alternator is suspect.

With the car off use the battery tester to put a load on the battery. It should be in the green zone. Yellow or worse - time for a new battery.

Whoops, my post was to the original question in the title, sorry for the confusion, I now realize that was an old thread and it has been revived with a slightly different issue, which does sound like the alternator as a member just detailed.

Default New starter, battery and alternator

Battery is less than 6 months old. Replaced when we fried the battery and alternator after upgrading the head unit. Did the ground wire upgrades and haven't had an issue since. Yesterday my wife had to get towed home because it wouldn't start. She's pretty handy and thought it was the starter. The tow truck driver tried jumping and starting to no avail. He deduced that the starter was done. I tried giving it the old hammer bang and it didn't work but I could feel it in my hand when she tried cranking it and it felt like the solenoid was gone. Put in a new one expecting to get her to work on time and nothing. Same clicking. Pulled out the multimeter and the battery reads 12.65. Luckily it's a manual so I'm going to push start it and test the alternator. I don't think it's the alternator though because it's less than 6 months old. Any suggestions?
