Automatic Headlight Leveling system error light on (2004 quattro sedan)
Hi Everyone,
I have an 04 ultrasport quattro sedan and the Automatic Headlight Leveling system light turned on. I'm currently trying to troubleshoot this and will explain my process.
I do not have a VAG com controller but am in the market to buy one if someone has recommendations with a quick explanation why it's good.
Symptoms: on ign on, the error light turns on. Headlights will not dip or move at any time. The light will never go off unless of course car is powered off.
Work I've done:
- obtained 4 other used sensors off parts cars (tested them with multimeter, all seem the same between all used pins)
- compared and swapped both my sensors with used ones with no results
- obtained 2 used headlight control computers, they visually seem ok inside.
- swapped computers with no results
- removed, cleaned, inspected both sensors. All seems to be in good shape.
- removed and inspected headlight motors, they seem clean and OK.
- bought 2 used auto leveling headlights, inspected and seem good, swapped around the lights, no results.
I noticed on another post that someone mentioned the passenger right auto dipping mirror being an issue but I'm not aware of that being connected to the headlight system.
Any thoughts? Anyone been through this before or have a schematic I could use?

Good to know, thank you. I just looked into what you said and it seems to make sense. I'll invest in a VAG com unit then as I'll certainly be needing it more in the future.

If the lights were on and anyone fiddles with them, it can screw up the leveling.
nothing may be wrong, but the message must be cleared in vag
there is a fuse that can be pulled to make the message go away.
I'd get get the car level and shut lights off and key out before doing it.
it is a temp fix and disables auto leveling..i think.
"autom. beam raise" is the fuse name...i think..
fixed my self induced problem..ahem..

Thanks, yup I pulled the fuse a couple weeks ago. It had the error when I bought the car so I'm going to invest in the VAG computer as I will be digging deep into this car soon to do a transmission and clutch job that will probably wreak all sorts of havoc to the computer.
