Default Brake lights come on during cold nights

OK, this keeps killing my battery.
When it is very cold out (New England) my brake lights turn on during the night. This is when the car is parked locked and unattented.
It does not make a difference if parking brake is on or off it still does it.
Any suggestions? 2004 B6 1.8QT 6sp manual

Default Rule #1, don't engage the parking brake on COLD nights unless you must...

...as your parking brake can freeze. As far as your lights go, your brake light switch is probably stuck. SHould be a simple fix, at least it is on the C5 A6.

parking brake does not change it. It does it without it engaged.

Default I KNOW that, I am just reminding you to avoid usage in cold weather...

...besides, the parking brake has nothing to do with the lights anyway.

Are all brake lights coming on (tails and center brake light) or just the center brake light?

today's reminder of why to avoide using the parking brake in cold weather

Default Yes, all are on in the middle of the night

Sometimes it is enough to step on the brake pedal and let go, other times I have to start the car and then it is OK.

Default I still say the brake lgiht switch is at fault...

..it is less than $20 for the aprt, and not too hard to install yourself.

Here is a writeup on how, but for a Jetta IV (I thisnk the process is the same, but the part numbers are probably different...I can look up the part number on ETKA tonight when I get home).

X-post to VW Vortex thread

Default My A4 did this

It was fixed with the brake light switch recall. Well, wasn't a recall on the B6, but it was on the same year Jetta I had. Either way, it's a known faulty part that does what you are mentioning. Never heard any correlation with weather, though.
