Car died on highway and wont start
Hey guys so i was on the highway yesterday doing about 60mph and my b6 a4 1.8t just died. Clutch was out engine was at about 2500 but nothing no power pulled to the side of the highway tried to start it and it wont start. Sound to me a lil sluggish but could be mistaken. No codes no lights. It did throw a engine speed sensor code a few weeks ago but went away. When i looked around someone had same issue and engine speed sensor was suggested a few times. Plus i believe the speedo was out when it happened. i slightly remeber seeing the speedo at 0 after it died but before i was stop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank u.

Do the usual, check for spark, check for fuel, then go after the one that's missing.

Sounds like classic fuel pump failure. It's happened to me on both my B5 and B6.

Remove the black access cover under the rear seat on the passenger side, then listen closely while someone turns the ignition on. There should be a hum sound for a second, and while cranking, a continuous hum. If you can't hear it, disconnect the electrical connector, then as a test, connect a standard headlight bulb to the pump's power wires in the harness connector, which will be the largest two wires. Turn the key to Start, and if the light illuminates brightly, you have power to the pump. In that case, the pump is likely bad.

To be on the safe side remove plugs and inspect.
I had this kind of failure before and it was a rod that broke. Since I wasn't speeding there was no hole in the block, "only" smashed plugs and pistons. (Let's hope it's not your case) |
<.... He said with dry understatement >
Try to avoid a spark when testing the wires to the pump, e. g. hook up whatever indicator bulb with the power off, then turn the key on. |
