Checking oil level on the 3.0...

Checking oil level on the 3.0...
I've noticed that the only way I can get any kind of reading whatsoever from the dipstick in my 3.0 is to wipe it down completely so that it is totally dry, then after pushing in / pulling out again, I have to rotate it around until I find a side of the ribbed thing that isn't completely covered in oil.
It seems like when pulling the dipstick out of the sheath, it invariably drags the tip against the side, thus covering most of the tip with oil.
Anyone else have the same problem?
This is either 'normal' or my car has about 2 quarts too much oil... lol...

Yeah, it's a problem with most cars really. But if the total circumference of the dipstick has oil too high and to the same level on it every time you you wipe it and dip it, you really want to get that taken care of right away. Too much oil is very definitely not good for your engine.

fvck... i just spent like 30 minutes checking the oil under good lighting...
... and it seems that the oil bead runs all the way up to the upper ball! fvck! The first several times I tried checking the oil, I figured I just couldn't see the oil or I wasn't wiping it off thoroughly enough or something because the whole stick was covered in oil!
I cannot believe this... the car is only 6 weeks old and I haven't touched the oil... fvck... I suppose this is what I get for assuming the Audi mechanics actually know what they are doing. fvck...
I'm gonna go cry myself to sleep now.

Here's a Tom and Ray link that discusses the effect of overfilling oil.

argh... thanks for the link... now the question is...
how much has been overfilled if the level is up to that ball?
And also... when checking the oil level, are you supposed to push the dip stick in all the way until it's sealed (e.g. like when the engine is running) or just until it stops going in, where it's sticking up about 1/4 inch from its sealed position and you have to push it harder to close / seal it... The manual isn't really clear on that point, and if it's the latter position, I may be fine (the 1/4 inch difference would push the oil level into the ridged area).
