Default Engine Speed Sensor (G28) replaced! I noticed an interesting thing though...

so it took about an hour for me to replace the Engine Speed Sensor. I initially had removed it from underneath the car (belly pan on). After I finished taking out the sensor and bolt, I went up top to snake it out of the engine bay and rats nest of wires behind the engine block.

Putting it back in I actually was able to do it from the top...with the oil filter in place! Not the easiest but do-able, especially if you don't want a mess of oil everywhere taking out the filter. You're able to look down directly from the fender, parallel to the firewall, you'll see the sensor hole and bolt hole.

Now about the interesting observation...on the transmission housing, I noticed a hole! It looked like something belonged there but couldn't figure out what. It's right next to the Engine Speed Sensor hole (which I got confused when I went to put the new sensor back in). I can stick my finger into this opening and feel gears, which I assume is the transmission. Is this normal? Perhaps someone else with a 6-speed, if you can remove the coolant tank and look at the transmission housing, just to the right of the oil filter.

Picture would help to get an idea of what maybe it should be.

Default Yeah I know. I didn't have my camera and my hands were all greasy.

I'll see if I can get a pic tomorrow.

Understood. How are the rear pads and rotors working out so far?

Default WTF!! I saw the same thing when I replaced my G28 sensor this weekend. Here's a pic.

Maybe it's some kind of heat ventilation for the clutch or flywheel?

Default That's it!!! Weird huh??

Maybe it is for ventilation but just seems weird it would be there without any kind of screen or anything as it seems debris can fall in there pretty easily with that big of a opening.

Wow, that is odd. Someone please chime in and explain? I'm going to look at mine too.

Did the sensor fix your issues too?

Default Yep, no more EPC light this morning (usually either EPC or CEL comes in).

Looks to be fixed! It was getting progressively worse as the week went on so figured it just wore out.
