Dipped left headlight?
Please be something as simple as a bulb replacement?
Both headlights are on for a minute or so after I start the car, then the left one goes out with the message dipped left headlight with a bulb picture and "X" through the picture.

If it is not actually dipped, the quick fix is to pull the fuse.
The message will go away.
Otherwise it needs to be fixed..probably some sensor (on the control arm?) and then the fault cleared.
I messed up mine fooling with the light when it was on..duh..so i just pulled my fuse.
i'm planning on aftermarket headlights later anyway.

What do you mean pull the fuse? And that would cause the headlight to go out?
It's on for a couple minutes after start, then it cuts out with that message and a light bulb with an X through it.
I just don't want to spend the money on the bulb if I don't need it.

start here.
There is a fuse that can removed for the leveling function. I'll look for it.

What does “Dipped Headlight” even mean?
Simply put, “Dipped Headlight” is Audi-speak for “there is something wrong with your low beam headlight” and can mean a number of things. There is a fuse that can removed for the leveling function. I'll look for it.

Pop the fuse cover off. It pries off with a screw driver.
It is on the drivers side console. You need leave the door open.
the inside cover will have a fuse map or diagram.
there will be a 4 fuses for left and right high and low beams.
then one fuse for "autom. beam raise"...I think that controls the leveling stuff.
pulling that one should at least make the message go away...i believe it will anyway...
you can try swapping the bulbs from one light to the other to get an idea whether it's just the bulb or ballast/wiring.
you still may have a bulb or ballast that is on the way out.

Thanks, on one of my days off I'll try switching the bulbs and see if that makes any difference.
Also, if I take the fuse out to get rid of the message, could that be causing the bulb to go out at the same time that the message pops up?

I'd pull the fuse when the car is level, checking it with the high beams on and pointed at a wall or garage door.
then fix the low beam issue.
then put the fuse back in.
don't pull the fuses or bulbs when the lights are on or key is on, just to be careful not to trip anything else.
