Engine sounds like a diesel during a cold start. Any suggestions why?
Its the best way I can describe the sound. It only happens when the weather is cool. The sound last for about 4-7 seconds and then it goes away. Kill the engine and start it again, it doesn't do it again. Drive it for a while and let it sit for 30 min. Start it up and it will make the noise for about 2 secconds and goes away. I thought it might be the lifters. I did a search on lifters but my sound is not constant. I only hear the sound on start ups. Other than that the car runs great.

My guess is the lifters (more)
Especially when it's cool and the oil is thicker it can take a few seconds to get the oil pressure up enough to keep the lifters pumped up enough to not clatter.

I have had this with my 1.8T, I had 'cheapo-brand' gas in it...-m-
then after the following (Chevron) fillup the problem went away. I had the same thing going on. I would start the car and it would give some knocking sound for a few seconds, then it would go away. I posted it here and someone suggested that it might have been the gasoline.
It was in my case.
