Default Flashing fuel symbol / raw fuel odor

New thread user and desperate for help. I recently had a strange icon on my dash come up I have never seen before. You can refer to the attached image but just know the fuel symbol will flash on and off as part of the symbol. As my fuel filter started to go, I thought it might be related which is no big deal as I have replaced it in the past with success. However, when I replaced my fuel filter the symbol did not go away and now....the interior of my car reeks of raw gasoline. I am unable to determine the source and it does not go away as the car runs. It is worst after sitting off for an extended period of time. The car runs smooth an there is NO noticeable difference in performance or fuel delivery. Any help would be welcome as I could not find any prior froms discussing this issue.

My guess is you have 2 issues. The icon on your display is just telling you your filler cap is not on tightly or there is an issue with the sensor on your filler cap. The odor you are smelling is likely coming from your fuel pump which is under the rear seat. My guess is a seal has gone.

I'll agree that there are two issues, but are you referring to the symbol for low windshield-washer fluid level, or the gas symbol?

That fuel smell has to be figured out as it means there is a fire danger. Have you had the fault codes scanned? I would expect there is a large-leak-detected code, meaning that the tank is not being sealed even though the fuel cap is on.

Default Gas cap

Thank you both for your reply. I have been monitoring the fuel filter for leaks and it has none. I AM referring the gas symbol and not the low windshield fluid symbol. I discovered there is a bleed off spring/sensor within the actual gas cap that I suspected may be bad. After removing the cap entirely and driving the car for two days the smell dissipated greatly leading me to believe i am in need of a new cap to regulate the fuel tank pressure. It is to be noted i have not received an additional gas cap light symbol, only the one that is pictured though i;m not sure my 02' B6 even has that icon. Will get the codes checked ASAP and see if a new VW/AUDI gas cap will fix the issue. THANKS AGAIN!
