Default gas consumption display

I have an 2004 audi quattro sport 1.8 turbo. while I'm driving and looking at my gas mileage consumption display it is changing constantly all different random numbers from 24 to 0 to 30 litres/100km its never done that before and there is a small number 1 sign in red in that display. What is going on possibly to explain that

That is probably your instantaneous fuel consumption rate. There is a button on the end of the wiper stalk. If you press the top or bottom edge of the switch, it should toggle you around each of the various computer DIS modes.

Also the flat button on the bottom of the stalk will flip you between Mode 1 Short Term and Mode 2 Long Term if you tap it briefly. If you hold that button for a couple of seconds, then whatever reading is currently showing will be reset to 0.
