Default Gearbox change

I have a 2.4 b6 v6. I had a problem with the original gearbox. It was not engaging gears and flashing PRND on the instrument panel. I have bought another similar gearbox and fitted onto the car. The gearbox was certified ok where I bought it but still does not engage gears and still flashing PRND on the instrument panel. The mechanic is telling me the control unit needs to be programmed or something like that to be able to work on the car. Can someone advise me if this is correct or I just bought a faulty gearbox. I thought if it’s fitted correctly it should just work immediately

"Another similar gearbox" is the question. As long as the identification code on the replacement unit is identical with the original unit, it should work properly in your car. If it is, and there are still problems, then likely the fault lies elsewhere, perhaps the Transmission Control Unit (TCM) is defective. However, if the replaced transmission is of a different I.D. code, the TCM will not react properly with it.
