How can you tell if a rim is 5x112 or 5x100 just from looking at it? There is a set of wheels......

Default it's normally marked on the rim itself what the drilled pattern was

if you have access to them - you can just simply try to put them on your car

Do you know where it is marked usually? Cos the guy I'm trying to buy from has no idea about rims.

Default If there are no markings stamped near the hub or on the back of the spokes...

the simple question could be what car were these wheels mounted on. If it was a Golf or TT, tehn it is probably 5x100. If mounted on an A4, A6, A8, etc. then 5x112.

The real proof would be the stampings on the wheel itself. Tell him to take the center cap off the wheel (if the lugs are hidden under the center cap), or look on the back of the wheel spokes or rim if lugs are exposed. There should be markings to indicate bolt pattern.
